Guardian Ad Litem: A person appointed by the court to represent a child during court proceedings and act to protect the child’s best interests.  During contentious child custody hearings, a Guardian Ad Litem or GAL may be appointed by the court to minimize emotional damage and allow the child to retain neutrality.  The role of the GAL may include conducting interviews, making reports to the court and attending mediation sessions.
